Agafay Desert from Marrakech: The Complete Guide
Updated October 3, 2026 · By the Sun Sky Camp team

The Agafay Desert is the closest desert to Marrakech: a plateau of bare, rolling hills about 40 km south-west of the city, with the High Atlas on the horizon. In less than an hour you leave the medina for a silent, lunar landscape where you can ride a quad, cross the hills by camel, watch the sunset and have dinner under the stars.
We wrote this guide at Sun Sky Camp, a desert camp in the middle of Agafay, to answer the questions our guests ask us most before they come.
What is the Agafay Desert?
Agafay is a stony desert, not a sea of sand dunes. The ground is made of earth and rock in shades of beige, ochre and pink, shaped into soft hills and dry valleys. There are very few buildings, only Berber villages and desert camps, which is why the place feels so remote while being so close to the city.
On clear days, especially in winter and spring, the snow-capped peaks of the High Atlas line the southern horizon. The light changes quickly at the end of the day: the hills turn gold, then pink, which makes sunset the most popular time to visit.
How to get to Agafay from Marrakech
The drive takes about 40 to 60 minutes depending on where you start in Marrakech. The last part is on narrow roads and dirt tracks, so most visitors come with the transport of their tour rather than on their own.
- With a tour: all our Agafay tours include a free shuttle from 9 meeting points in Marrakech, such as Bab Agnaou and Kubbat Fatima Ezzahra, and the drive back after the activity.
- Private transfer: we can pick you up at your hotel or riad in a private vehicle, with a price per group.
- By car or taxi: possible, but arrange your return in advance, as you will not find taxis waiting in the desert.
What to do in the Agafay Desert
Most activities take place in the late afternoon and evening, to enjoy the sunset and the cooler air. The main options:
- Quad biking: a guided ride on the desert tracks with helmet and goggles, usually combined with a camel ride and dinner, from €18.
- Camel ride at sunset: a calm ride across the hills as the light turns gold, followed by dinner at the camp, from €18.
- Dinner and fire show: Moroccan salads, tagine and couscous in Berber tents, then live music, drums and fire performers, from €10.
- Pool day: a sun lounger by the pool with lunch, the best plan on hot days, from €15.
- A night at the camp: sleep in a private tent, look at the stars far from the city lights and wake up for the sunrise, from €89.
When to go
Agafay can be visited all year, but the experience changes with the seasons.
- Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November): warm days and mild evenings, the most comfortable time for quad and camel rides.
- Summer (June to August): very hot during the day. Choose an evening tour or a pool day, and drink plenty of water.
- Winter (December to February): sunny days, clear skies and snow on the Atlas, but the desert gets cold after sunset. Bring a warm jacket for dinner outside.
Whatever the season, the hour around sunset is the highlight: our evening tours are timed so that you are in the hills when the sun goes down.
What to wear and bring
- Closed shoes, as the ground is stony.
- A scarf or buff against the dust on the quad. Helmets and goggles are provided.
- Sunglasses and sun cream, even in winter.
- A warm layer for the evening from October to April.
- Some cash for tips and drinks that are not included in the price.
Agafay or Merzouga?
Merzouga, at the edge of the Sahara, has the famous orange sand dunes of Erg Chebbi, but it is about 9 hours from Marrakech by road, so you need at least two or three days. Agafay gives you the desert atmosphere, camels, silence and starry skies in a single evening, without the long drive.
Many travellers choose Agafay when they only have a few days in Marrakech, and keep the Sahara for a longer trip. If you have a full day, you can also combine the city with a day trip to the mountains or waterfalls.
