The Ourika Valley is the closest escape from Marrakech into the Atlas Mountains: about 60 km south of the city, a green valley of Berber villages, terraced fields and riverside cafés along the Ourika River. In one easy day you can walk to waterfalls, have lunch next to the river and be back in Marrakech for dinner.
This guide explains how the day works, from the drive to the hike, so you can choose the right plan.
How far is the Ourika Valley from Marrakech?
About 60 km. The road leaves the plain and climbs gently into the foothills of the High Atlas, and it takes about one hour to reach the valley. As you drive up, the landscape changes from dry plain to green fields, red-earth villages and, in winter and spring, snowy peaks.
What to see along the way
- Panoramic viewpoints over the valley and the High Atlas.
- A women's argan cooperative at Tnin Ourika, where you can see how argan oil is made and taste it.
- A Berber house, for mint tea with bread, honey and olives.
- Setti Fadma, the village at the end of the road, with its riverside restaurants and the path up to the waterfalls.
The hike to the Ourika waterfalls
From Setti Fadma, a path climbs along a side stream to a series of waterfalls. Our guided hike takes about 1.5 hours. The path is rocky and steep in places, so wear shoes with good grip and keep your hands free.
The hike is optional: if you prefer, you can stay at a riverside restaurant and enjoy the view while the others walk.
Lunch by the river
Restaurants in Setti Fadma set their tables and cushions right on the riverbank, some on small platforms over the water. Tagines and grilled meat are cooked on the spot. It is the most relaxing moment of the day, especially in summer, when the valley is much cooler than Marrakech.
When to go
The valley is lovely all year. Spring is the greenest season. In summer, families from Marrakech come for the cooler air, so weekends are busy. In winter the peaks are snowy and the days are fresh, so bring a warm layer. After heavy rain or storms the river can rise quickly: always follow your guide near the water.
Ourika or Ouzoud?
Ourika is closer and shorter: about an hour each way, with time to relax. The Ouzoud Waterfalls are much higher and include a boat ride, but they are about 3 hours each way. If you want an easy day, choose Ourika. If you want more adventure close to Marrakech, the Atlas Mountains zipline is another good option.
How much does it cost?
Our Ourika Valley day trip costs from 18 € per person, with transport from Marrakech, the stops on the way and the guided hike to the waterfalls. The tour page lists exactly what is included. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before, and you pay on the day.
