Marrakech Airport to the Medina: Taxi, Bus or Transfer?

Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) is only about 6 km from the medina, but the first trip into the city can be confusing: taxis, buses and drivers all wait outside the terminal, and many riads cannot be reached by car.
Here is how to get from the airport to your hotel or riad without stress, and what to prepare before you land.
How far is the airport from the medina?
About 6 km. The drive takes 15 to 30 minutes depending on traffic and on where your accommodation is. Hotels in Gueliz, Hivernage or the Palmeraie are reached by car to the door; riads inside the medina are a different story (see below).
Your options
- Private transfer: a driver waits for you at arrivals with a sign showing your name, helps with your luggage and takes you straight to your hotel or riad in a private air-conditioned car, from 18 €. Your flight is tracked, so a delay is not a problem.
- Taxi: taxis wait outside the terminal. Agree on the price before you get in, as fares from the airport are often higher than for the same distance in town.
- Airport bus: a bus line connects the airport with the city centre and Jemaa el-Fna. It is the cheapest option, but less practical with big suitcases.
Arriving at a riad in the medina
Most riads are in narrow lanes where cars cannot go. Your driver drops you at the nearest point a car can reach. From there, staff from your riad often come to meet you, or a porter with a hand cart can carry your luggage for a small tip.
Send your riad your arrival time in advance and ask where the car should stop: it makes the last few hundred metres much easier, especially at night.
Tips for your arrival
- Get some dirhams from the ATMs in the arrivals hall: taxis, porters and small shops rarely take cards.
- A local SIM card gives you mobile data from your first minute, useful for maps in the medina.
- Save your riad's address, phone number and map pin offline before you land.
- For your departure, plan to leave your hotel about 3 hours before an international flight.
